SAO PAULO: 20 million people, southamerica largest metropoly

Current location: click here

And here I'm, 37 years later visiting Sao Paulo to see and feel what has happened to this big and not so popular city in all these years. It's actually curiosity finding out what has changed and not special expectations what motivates me to come.

It is Easter weekend, and I had chosen to flight instead of taking the 20 hours bus from Porto Alegre. Flights were of course more expensive and I ended up flying on Good Friday, saving 250 USD by doing this.

Even from the sky you get a feeling about this city.

Because of the long weekend, most hostels were full. I stayed at a hostel close to the Av. Paulista, a modern part of the city, its business and financial center.

As in other cities, Sao Paulo also has a Walking Tour group. I took the tour that starts in Praca da Republica and visits the main attractions in the old downtown. The tour took 4 1/2 hours with a short 30min break for a snack. The tour is highly recommended!!

I like Sao Paulo attractions, but disagree with the Municipalidad de Sao Paulo about having to advertise them even in the traffic lights. What is next?  Coke red? Sprite green?

After the tour I went to the Municipal Market, a place where all Paulistas go for a Pastel de Bacalhau and a Sanduíche de Mortadela.

If Buenos Aires has Maradona clones, Sao Paulo has ... Roberto Carlos!!  I was actually expecting to see Pelé somewhere.

The Sao Paulo Museum of Art (MASP) is also highly recommended. Go at 10am as they open or you will have to queue for a while.

The Ibirapuera park provides a green space where paulistas escape on the weekends. It is really a big and very nice park.
