El Calafate is a small town located at southeast shore of Lago Argentino. With around 9.000 habitants, it shows a steady growth over the last 10 years, all due to a main attraction located around 80km west of town: the Perito Moreno glacier.
Reaching El Calafate ment a new Chile/Argentina border crossing for me (the 5th in this trip) and a 6 hours bus drive.
The water of Lake Argentino has the turquoise color characteristic for glacier waters. These cloudy waters are also called "glacier milk".
Not only the water is somehow special; the clouds show strange shapes too, caused by the strong winds in the area.
What here looks as a nice sunny afternoon was really a very windy walk, strong enough to push everybody back one step from time to time. The black neck swans seem very used to it.
The Perito Moreno visit started the next day. We had first to drive about 1 hour to the west in order to reach the National Park and the port where the catamarans leave. The day was sunny for the moment and we had a really persistent rainbow; it was there for more than 30min.
Once on the catamaran we got closer to the glacier front; and it started to rain too. It was hard to keep the camera dry and some photos may look cloudy.
However Lisa's smile here bring the glacier to glow.
After the boat tour we moved to the runway available next to the other, larger front of the glacier for a closer look. From this point you could also hear the loud noise inside the glacier caused by big chunks of ice falling down.
By the end of the tour I was glad this incredible place could be enjoyed (and seen) even by rain.
