The day for the ferryboat trip to Patagonia finally arrived. Navimag is the company offering the trips sailing from Puerto Montt to Puerto Natales. One characteristic of this trip is that it runs once a week and is sold out long before departure date. All these made it a sort of milestone in my schedule as missing the date would mean waiting one week. The only other transportation mean by land between the two cities is 2.317km long and requires travelling through argentinean roads.
Boarding was done around 1am on Sunday 16th, with almost 2 days delay. The ship was not the one initially planned and had less cabins, but many passengers with a tight schedule cancelled their reservations after the delay so that the reduced cabin offer was not a problem; and the cabins were better. We were around 30 passengers on the boat.
We spent the first night at the harbour, waiting for the two transport decks to be loaded. Some seals used this time to play and climb over the buoys.
Loading was completed around 14:00 on Sunday and we raised anchor!
The cabins had 4 or 6 beds and a window. I was in a 4 bed cabin where one bed stayed free.
The first morning started with a beatiful weather, moonset and sunrise all at once.
As we approched Gofo de Penas we could see seals, Humpback whales, dolphins and one orca. Due to the size of the ferryboat, these animals did not come too close to the ship and kept some distance. Here the respiration steam of a humpback whale.
The weather continue to be nice and we had some very nice views.
On Tuesday we reached Puerto Eden. All passengers were allowed to go to land.
This is a photo the group that visited Puerto Eden with our ship in the background.
And here a photo I took showing a cormorant that flies over the water over the ship's reflection.
After leaving Puerto Eden we sailed the channels close to the glaciers of the NP Bernardo O'higgins.
We arrived Puerto Natales on Wednesday at 10:00am after a nice a memorable sailing trip.
