LIMA: the starting point

Current location:  click here

Lima is the capital and the largest city of Peru. It is located in central coastal part of the country, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. With a population approaching 9 million Lima is the largest metropolitan area of Peru and the fifth largest city in the Americas.

Today  Jan 18th Lima is celebrating its 479 anniversary. The city was founded by the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro in 1535 and became the capital and most important city in the Spanish Viceroyalty of Peru. The National University of San Marcos, founded on May 12, 1551 during Spanish colonial regime, is the oldest continuously functioning university in the Americas.

I find this time of the year is the best time to visit Lima. It’s warm (around 28 °C) but not too hot and there is a fresh breeze blowing from the ocean. This same breeze brings foggy weather from time to time keeping the sun hidden for hours and in some cases days.

I'm staying in a small flat in Miraflores. It´s centrally located and has a partial ocean view. The area is quite interesting due to its mix of nice parks, easy access to the beach, shopping and entertaiment. It´s also plenty of good restaurants.

Finding open Wifi around is not difficult. The only problem (and difference to previous visits) is that these free hotspots are now overloaded and provide a terrible response time. Loading photos is not working, next time I will look for an internet cafe to load them, promised. And there is also a story about taxi driver Elias, speaking 3 local languages (spanish, quechua and shipibo) and married to a native shipibo woman. Globalization a la Peru.

  1. Good luck for your journey Jose! May you see many new sights and meet interesting new people.
And just for your information: in contrast to your 28°C in Lima we have 1°C in Poing and the roads on the way to the office were pretty slippery this morning due to snow and sleet ... ;-)
